Dr. Thomas Horine
About
I was born and grew up in the region that IU Southeast serves. I graduated nearby Jeffersonville High School in 1996 and received my bachelor's degree in mathematics at Purdue University. I finished my education at Princeton University, earning my PhD.
I first started teaching at IU Southeast as an adjunct in 2005, and except for a one-year visiting position at Saint Louis University and one other semester, I have been here ever since!
Teaching
My teaching largely centers around algebra. I regularly teach both the linear algebra and modern algebra courses, along with History of Mathematics. I also teach a Mathematics for Cybersecurity course for the Computer Science department, as that dovetails well with this material.
Research
My research concerns the sporadic simple group J1 and a couple of its associated structures: the Livingstone graph and the Janko manifold/orbifold.
