Matt Johnson

Matt has worked as a cartographer for nearly 20 years, including seven years with National Geographic Maps. He started at the IGWS in 2012 as the cartographic coordinator, which over the years transitioned to the cartographic specialist and digital collections manager. He oversaw the production of printed and interactive web maps, created figures for publications, and provided support to IGWS scientists and researchers with data visualization. He also managed project archiving.

Matt transitioned in 2021 to the assistant director for information services. In this role he leads a team of highly skilled professional staff involved with GIS, physical and digital collections, education outreach, publication, and IT. Matt earned a bachelor of science degree in geography with a concentration in GIS from Appalachian State University in 2003.

After the retirement of longtime Director and State Geologist Todd Thompson, Matt was appointed as interim director of the Survey in August 2026. In this new role, Johnson is proud to support a dedicated team of researchers and business and information services professionals.
